Subject notes
The land behind the croft house has not been cultivated. From the mid-19th century the population fell due to emigration. This has led to crofts being tenanted by the elderly or indeed abandoned. Sometimes the owner of the tenancy was living overseas. The hills opposite are devoid of soil. The flat land on which the scattered settlement lies is a raised beach, cut by the sea when the water level was about 8 metres higher than it is now.
