Subject notes
The settlement pattern is dispersed with each house sitting on its own croft land. The land is marginal for cultivation, and produced mainly hay for fodder and potatoes. Raising beef cattle and sheep, and fishing, has been more important. Income was supplemented by paid work either locally, in the merchant navy or distant cities. Tourism has brought additional income and diversification and while emigration continues there has been immigration into the area from the rest of Scotland and England.
