Subject notes
Raising beef cattle for sale to south is well-established in the Highlands, long pre-dating the introduction of sheep-farming in 18th and 19th centuries. Cattle were brought down to the Central Lowlands for sale, notably at the Falkirk Tryst. The introduction of the railways allowed them to be brought to market in better condition.
