Subject notes
Raising beef cattle for sale to the south is well-established in the Highlands, long pre-dating the introduction of sheep-farming in 18th and 19th centuries. Cattle were brought down to the Central Lowlands for sale, notably at the Falkirk Tryst.Bracken has spread over parts of the Highlands as a result of deforestation and over-grazing. Cattle are better than sheep at slowing its spread. The plant propagates itself by means of underground rhizomes or shoots and by propelling its seeds.
