Subject notes
In the past many coastal Highland villages piped raw sewage directly into the sea. A low tide could be unpleasant. This no longer happens and would be illegal. Cargo ships served the west coast on a regular basis at this time. The village was built to accommodate slate workers. Slate was exported from Argyll to roof the houses and tenements of Scotland and further afield. The slate quarries have since closed.
