Galashiels Station was on the Waverley line which ran from Edinburgh to Carlisle. It was closed in 1969 as part of a massive railway closure programme. Detailed planning for the re-opening of the line to Edinburgh was underway in 2005. Galashiels developed as a manufacturing town specialising in tweeds and woollen hosiery.
