Subject notes
The chain bridge and its toll house were opened in 1826. Walking was the main form of transport at the time and a footbridge was a great improvement on the ford. Melrose grew up on the banks of the River Tweed and around the 12th century Cistercian abbey. The abbey was of considerable economic as well as spiritual significance.
