Subject notes
While in the Central Lowlands tractors and other machinery had replaced horses and much of the manual work by the 1950s, in the Highlands this was less so. The crofts did not generate sufficient income to pay for mechanisation. Also the small fields made mechanisation less advantageous. Castle Stalker dates from circa 1450 and was built by the Stewarts of Appin. The castle lost its roof after the owners moved to a new house on the mainland in circa 1800. In the 1970s it was re-roofed and became a home once more.
