Subject notes
Ullapool was planned on a gridiron pattern by the British Fisheries Society in the 1788. For a number of reasons it was not a great success at that time as a fishing port. In the late 20th century Ullapool became the mainland port for Stornoway and the road to Inverness was widened. The pier was greatly extended to cope with the ferry (over 100 metres long) and large deep sea fishing boats unloading onto articulated refrigerated trucks.
