Subject notes
The small group of houses lies in west Aberdeenshire in a farming area. Poor soils and a short growing season encouraged specialisation in livestock rearing and fattening to produce meat of the highest quality. The local Aberdeen-Angus breed is world famous. The area is rural with a dispersed settlement pattern, farmers (and previously, farm workers) living in the farmhouses (and bothies) on the farms themselves. The small villages housed one or two shops and tradesmen that serviced the farms.
