Subject notes
Most farms would keep hens and ducks and were generally more self-sufficient than now. Probably the hen was encouraged to hatch the eggs in the absence of the mother duck. In such circumstances the ducklings accept the hen as their mother, although she is unlikely to teach them to swim.
