Subject notes
The bunting is probably left over from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth at the beginning of the previous month. There is a coal fire on in the house. The colour of the chimney pots indicates that only one fire is lit on a daily basis. Coal was the main form of heating at this time. Usually the fire went out at night and the grate had to be cleaned and the fire laid and lit each morning.
