Subject notes
Jupiter was a diesel-electric paddle steamer (642 tons). She was built by Fairfields of Govan, entered service in 1937 and was withdrawn from service in 1957, despite being recently converted from coal to oil-burning. The planks were for loading cars. They were laid between the pier and the wide sponson deck which paddle steamers had amidships. The raised deck is above the paddle box. When the tide was low, the gangplank was laid between it and the pier making it less steep for passengers.
