Subject notes
Bridges built of stone were based on arches as the only way in which a span could be created. It was possible for the roadway to be level, however. Where there was no bridge, carts, horses and pedestrians had to cross rivers by a ford. Sometimes pedestrians could use stepping stones. How soon a river was bridged depended on local finances until the construction of military roads and turnpikes in the18th and 19th centuries.
