Subject notes
Granite was quarried throughout the north-east including near Braemar. It is a hard metamorphic rock and unlike sandstone used elsewhere in Scotland, the edges remain sharp and it does not discolour. The minerals in it sparkle in the sunshine, hence the reference to the 'Silver City' of Aberdeen. It was in this house that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote part of 'Treasure Island' during a wet holiday in Braemar. The novel was published in 1881.
