Subject notes
Canongate Bridge was the main entrance to Jedburgh, leading to the Canongate. Canongate Port, a fortified entranceway, was at the end of the bridge. Where there was no bridge, carts, horses and pedestrians had to cross rivers by a ford. How soon a river was bridged depended on local finances until the construction of military roads and turnpikes in the18th and 19th centuries.
