Subject notes
The Borders were a major sheep producing area from the days of the great Border abbeys. The Cheviot breed was developed there. Howden is one of the locations visited in the annual riding of the marches. In common with many old burghs, Jedburgh each year has a ceremony commemorating when the burghers used to check that the marches (boundaries) of the burgh had not been encroached upon.
