Subject notes
The Borders were a major sheep producing area from the days of the great Border abbeys. The Cheviot breed was developed there. The drier climate and gentler, less exposed valleys and hills allow the production of heavier sheep and better wool than in the Highlands. The production of woollen clothing has been a major Borders industry for centuries.
