Subject notes
The cottage was built as a toll house on the Scottish side of the English border. The bridge was designed by Smeaton and opened in 1766. Up to 1856 marriages were frequently conducted there often for English couples taking advantage of the different marriage laws in Scotland. The ford at Coldstream was often used by invading armies, including Edward I in 1296. General Monck raised the Coldstream Guards here.
