Subject notes
The ferry was moored by a crewman jumping ashore to tie a rope onto a large ring, one of a line of rings on the jetty. The force of the engines then kept the ferry alongside. The David Macbrayne steamer Loch Seaforth (1089 tons) was completed in 1947 and sank in 1973 after striking a rock. She served on the Mallaig - Kyle - Stornoway route. The railway from Inverness previously terminated at Strome Ferry, a poor harbour. The line was extended to Kyle in 1897.
