Subject notes
The ferry was operated by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company and was very profitable. The capacity of the ferries was progressively increased until they were made redundant by the opening of the bridge in 1995. The ruin in the background is Castle Moil. The kyle or narrows was named after King Haakon of Norway. It is said that a MacKinnon clan chief ran a heavy chain across the narrows about 900 AD to extract tolls from passing ships.
