Subject notes
The ferries and their crews were based in Kyleakin. The ferry was operated by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company and was very profitable. Long queues of cars developed in the summer and some travellers had to wait until the next day, sleeping in their cars overnight. The capacity of the ferries was progressively increased and the turntable type was replaced with roll-on roll-off. The ferries were eventually made redundant in 1995 by the opening of a road bridge.
