Subject notes
Salmon fishing is now restricted to angling on rivers which brings much more money into the local economy. With the arrival of the railway in the 19th century Nairn developed as a bathing and golfing resort. Its climate is dry and sunny as it is in the rain shadow of the Highlands. The town marked the cultural boundary between the Highlands and Lowlands with Gaelic spoken to the west and the Doric to the east.
