There is a shingle beach with a small stream running across it to the loch. Some of the hill slopes are bare, others are forested in coniferous trees. There is a group of mature broad-leaved trees at the end of the reservoir.

The extent of the beach suggests the water level on this day in late June was some way below maximum. The Carron Valley was dammed and flooded by Stirlingshire and Falkirk Water Board in the 1930s. Demand for water in the Falkirk area was high, due to the large number of iron foundries.
