Description
Stocking purse also called a long purse, wallet purse, misers' or ring purse. This one is red cotton with gold, blue, white and black (glass) beads sewn on in a flower and leaf pattern. Decorated gold rings circle the item and pull it into a bow shape. Centre opening.
These were usually netted, knitted or crocheted. They have a central opening and a pair of rings known as sliders which secure the purse and separate different coins from each other. It could be carried in the hand, bag or pocket or folded over a belt. Many were made as presents and were though suitable to give a gentleman. Popular in England and Frances from the mid 18th to early 20th century.
