Administrative History
John Telfer, (1835-1915) was born in Newton Mearns and moved with his family to Falkirk when his father was a patternmaker at Falkirk Foundry. John worked in the moulding shop and then became an apprentice engineer in Bainsford and then worked in Glasgow and then Grangemouth on the screw steamer Elf. He was an ironturner with Smith Fullerton & Co, Camelon Foundry, and was a foreman for ten years at Kilns then foreman at Castlelaurie Foundry. In 1886 he became an assistant manager at Falkirk Foundry, and then became Manager of Castlelaurie Foundry. He retired c. 1904 when "Being exceedingly fond of photography they presented him with a valuable camera on his retiral" (Falkirk Herald July 22 1908). John Telfer set up "Telfer's Choir" in Falkirk. He studied Tonic Sol-fa in 1866 and then set up the Falkirk Tonic Sol-fa Association and was appointed their conductor. Although he was a Baptist, he was appointed the Precentor in Grahamston Parish Church (appointed by the Baird Trust). He was also member of the Falkirk Building Society committee, member of the Sir John de Graeme Lodge of Oddfellows, member of Free Library Committee, Falkirk Burns Club and the Council of the Natural History and Archaeology Society.

William Telfer (1907-1993), John Telfer’s grandson, was an artist, amateur musician and Vice Chairman of Falkirk Arts & Civic Council. and was the Managing Director of Thomas Paul & Co. He was a violinist with the Siddall Orchestra and conducted the Falkirk Orchestra.
