Description
Halfpenny trade token issued by John Wilkinson Ironmaster, 1787. Decorated with a bust on the obverse and the image of a man (possibly Vulcan) hammering on an anvil with a ship in the background.

Wilkinson issued these tokens during a time when a substitute for small change was needed. They were used to pay employees and as a form of self promotion. Wilkinson was an English industrialist who pioneered the making of cast iron and cast iron goods.
