Description
A large centrepiece or epergne with an intricate base that includes two cherubs holding hounds. The main column has a lozenge-shaped panels containing thistles and is surrounded by four draped female figures representing the arts. The upper part has interwoven festoons hung with balls and chains. These support a beaded dish housing a glass bowl etched with alternating panels of thistles and roses. The whole thing is designed to dismantle for cleaning. An engraved shield on the base reads "PRESENTED TO/ John Russel Esquire of Mayfield ----/ FRIENDS IN RECOGNITION OF HIS WORTH/ AND SPECIALLY TO MARK THEIR APPRECIATION/ OF THE GREAT VALUE OF HIS PUBLIC SERVICES/ EXTENDING OVER TWENTY YEARS OF MUNICIPAL LIFE,/ in his native town of Falkirk,/ THE LAST TEN YEARS/ AS PROVOST OF THAT BURGH,/ Falkirk."
This is part of a silver dessert service presented to Provost John Russel of Mayfield, JP, in 1877 by his friends to mark their appreciation of the great value of his public services and presented in 1923 to the Town Council by RWM Walker, son-in-law of Provost John Russel.
It consists of 10 pieces plus a fitted packing case.
