Administrative History
Local authorities were given authority to fund and operate cemeteries from 1855. Church graveyards were the responsibility of Heritors until in 1894 parish councils or town councils were allowed to accept responsibility for church graveyards from the Heritors. In 1925 all remaining Church of Scotland church graveyards were transferred into the care of the parish councils (which were replaced by district councils from 1930) or the town councils. Some cemeteries were run by Joint Committees of two or more local authorities. Grandsable Cemetery was one example of this: run by a joint committee of Polmont Parish and Grangemouth Parish., and serving both areas.Cremation was permitted by and Act of Parliament in 1902. Responsibility for cemeteries and the crematorium transferred to Falkirk District Council in 1975 and then to Falkirk Council in 1996.

Cemeteries and Crematorium section was a part of the Amenity & Recreation Department in 1975, and in August 1990 became part of the Leisure Department (following the amalgamation of Amenity & Recreation Department with Libraries & Museums Department). In April 1996 it became a section of Leisure & Community Services, which later became Community & Environmental Services in November 1998 and then Community Services in June 2000. It adopted the name Bereavement Services in 2006. In early 2011, preceding the creation of Falkirk community trust, Bereavement Services was transferred to Corporate Services.
