Description
Large cast iron fireback with a central scene depicting Orpheus playing his lyre surrounded by animals. Around this is a frame of fruit. The top is cavetto in shape and supports two fishy monsters and a central lion-style head.
This item is illustrated in the company catalogue a11.02, it cost £4.4.0.. This fireback was ordered from the Carron Company's George St Office on 29 April 1915 (as detailed on material in Lorimer Papers GEN 1963/36/136a&b University of Edinburgh, Special Collections). It was part of the work done by Sir Robert Lorimer on 'Midfield' as Lasswade and was installed in the hallway. However, this particular item was bought by Robert Lorimer for Midfield in Lasswade, along with a second for Marchmont in Berwickshire (these were removed). The cost for the two was £5.16.6. Two other copies of the fireback were ordered through James Gray, George St, Edinburgh by Lorimer for his work at 'Dunrobin' Sutherland in 1920. These are still in situ (2004).
