Description
Brass carbide lamp with fluted sides, embossed on the top "OFF / BREWAER / BRITISH MADE". The reflector has been replaced using the base of a tin can. Made by Brewaer in 1919 (?). Used at Bathgate in the Blabardie and Eastern Pits by the donor's father.
These lamps used acetylene gas as their fuel source and burned with an open flame. They were attached to the front of the cap and could be used in mines that were gas free - such as the pits on the Slamannan plateau. The lamp has two compartments, one contained water, the other lumps of calcium carbide. Water dripped onto the calcium carbide and produced acetylene gas which burns with a bright yellow flame.
