Description
Pencil and acrylic study for a portrait of George Young created as part of the "Dream Team" works for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
George Young was born in Grangemouth on October 27 1922 and died on January 10, 1997. He had 53 caps for the Scotland football team. Club: Rangers
Young was equally comfortable and capable at right-back or centre-half and dominated the defence at club and country level in the years immediately after World War II. He joined Rangers from the junior side Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in 1941 and played in two wartime internationals in 1943. After the war he won 53 caps and captained Scotland on 48 occasions. ‘Corky’, as he was nicknamed, played in seven successive internationals against England between 1947 and 1953. He spent his entire senior career with Rangers where he won six championships, four Scottish Cups and two League Cups. In 1949 he led Rangers to their first ever domestic treble. Young retired from playing in 1957 after which he concentrated on business interests, which included a newspaper column and hotel management. From 1959 until 1962 he was manager of the now-defunct Third Lanark.
