medal; jubilee (Iron, Hardware & Metal Trades Pension Society)
Production date
1893
Description
Silver medal to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the Iron, Hardware and Metal Trades Pension Society. The obverse has a bust of the Prince of Wales with the words: "HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE OF WALES/ JUBILEE 1893". The reverse also has a bust (presumably RW Kennard) with the words: "IRON HARDWARE & METAL TRADES PENSION SOCIETY/ RW KENNARD FOUNDER". The Prince of Wales attended the society's 50 year anniversary celebrations at the Guildhall in 1893 and announced that Queen Victoria had confirmed royal patronage.
The Iron, Hardware and Metal Trades pension scheme was set up by R.W. Kennard in 1843. It was started in London by a group of interested parties to provide a fund for pensions for distressed members of the trade and their widows. By 1857 it created a benevolent fund as well. It later expanded its remit again and became the Rainy Day Trust which still exists today (2020).
