mortarium (stamped)
Description
A rim sherd in bright, orange-brown fabric with some dense black in the core which is exposed on the internal surface, probably due to reduction during firing. There is a left-facing stamp from the same die as that on 2002-042-037a. It is tempting to accept this as the second stamp from 2002-042-037a, but there are clear remains of white slip surviving in the stamp. The profile is similar to 2002-042-037a, but there are differences. The different slips on the two stamps and the slight, but definite difference in profile, make it virtually certain that it is not part of 2002-042-037a, but from a different mortarium.
