Subject notes
Five road workers are standing in front of a road roller, registration MS4157. The roller has a large front roller above which is a box with a prancing horse trademark. Behind it is the chimney and a roof over the engine, which has a large flywheel.

The registration number indicates the road roller was registered in Stirlingshire in 1923. It is probably a 10 tonne Aveling & Porter E type steam road roller, one of more than 10,000 steam road rollers built by the company. The E type had a piston valve engine and showed excellent economy on the road.
