Description
View, looking east, of Bainsford Bridge, raised to allow a boat's passage. The boat is sailing west. Groups on either side of the canal await the bridge re-opening. The ladies are in Edwardian dress. The boat appears to be a small puffer. There is an elegant electric street lamp on the right of the style installed in Falkirk's main thoroughfares in association with the opening of Falkirk Power Station in 1903. They were made by the Falkirk Iron Company. The gas light has not yet been removed.

Subject notes
As the Forth and Clyde Canal was a ship canal, the bridges over it had to open in order to allow vessels with masts to pass through. The original bridges opened by raising both halves. They were called bascule bridges. The bridge was replaced by a swing bridge in 1905.
