washing machine
Description
The washing machine takes the form of a wooden tub set on four long legs with a hand-pumped handle on the top. The tub is of stave construction, like a barrel, with three iron hoops, and is painted red externally. Inside there are vertical ribs to catch the washing. A small bung hole near the bottom of one side was to drain the water out. Next to it is the remnant of a small chain to which the stopped was attached. The legs are turned and moulded. The lid is square in shape with two brass hinges (modern), surmounted by the wooden handle and cast iron cogs to transfer the power to a truncated washing dolly fixed under the lid.
The washing machine was used at Parkhall Farm, Maddiston by the Smith family. It was given to the donor as an "antique" in 1975.
