Description
A group of men, foremen and management, look at the camera as water is pumped out of Redding No 23 Pit. The ground is strewn with wooden logs and broken equipment.

The mine's own pumps and equipment from other collieries were used and eventually a rate of 220,000 litres per hour was achieved. Twenty-one men were rescued on the day and, after heroic efforts, five more were rescued nine days later. Thirty-seven miners died.
