samian; decorated

Description
. Form 37, probably Central Gaulish [2001-14-31 & 39]. A badly made and abraded bowl with a worn ovolo over a ?beaded border. The ovolo tongue has a rosette and could be ovolo 1 of Docilis (S&S, Fig.24, 1). Below a series of panels have been created by placing small trefoils over vertical beaded borders (or possibly slim columns) with festoons between. The festoons may be toothed as S&S Fig.24, 3. Above the festoons are double circles (as S&S Fig.24, 7 but also used by other potters, e.g. S&S, Pl.142, 26-7 by Cettus). Below the festoons there is a faint indication of small figures within the 'panels'. The overall design is most unusual. Although too damaged both in manufacture and in the ground to fully disentangle, a Hadrianic-Antonine date appears likely on stylistic grounds.
