samian; decorated

Description
Form 37, East Gaulish, probably Rheinzabern (2002-6-53). The worn sherd has broken just below the ovolo frieze to show panel decoration divided by wavy lines with rosette terminals. To the left is a small plain double-bordered medallion. To the right is a warrior of a type derived from Rogers 1999, R3026, one of the less common types created by Potter X-2 (cf S&S, Pl.7, 95; S&S describe the type as an Amazon due to the distinctive shape of the shield). The figure has not been identified among East Gaulish sources, but an Antonine date seems reasonable for the piece.
