samian; decorated

Description
12 sherds, including rim and base, from a DR38. Most of the pieces join. There are two lead rivets still in place - one adjacent to the foot ting and the other in the centre of the plain band below the rim. Below the band of egg and dart are at least three roundels contaiing human fugures with wings. Parts of three dolphins can be made out in the swags between roundels.
Form 37, Central Gaulish; eleven sherds, all joining, make up about half the vessel. An ovolo frieze, Rogers 1974, B105 lies above panel decoration divided by bead rows with blob terminals. The design consists of the following panels (from left to right):
a) A large double bordered medallion containing the cupid O.497. In the lower spandrels of the panel are astragali (possibly Rogers 1974, R62) placed diagonally.
b) The column Rogers 1974, P3. The upper part of this narrow panel probably contained the rosette, Rogers 1974, C144.
c) The vertical space is split horizontally into two panels. The upper panel contains a single-bordered festoon suspended from astragali and containing the dolphin, O.2384. The spandrels below the festoon contain small circles, probably beaded (as Rogers 1974, E51). The lower panel contains the bird, O.2317.
d) A repeat of b).
e) As a) except that the medallion contains the cupid O.378. In the spandrels above the medallion are small beaded circles
f) A repeat of b).
g) As c) except that the festoon contains the dolphin, O.2393 and the lower panel contains the bird, O.2324 with a small ‘palm’ branch, Rogers 1974, J.160.
h) A repeat of b). It is this panel which is sufficiently complete to show the rosette.
i) A repeat of a). The surviving upper spandrels show small beaded circles as in d). However, the lower spandrels are empty.
The arrangement, ovolo and many of the types match work by Albucius (cf. S&S, Pl.121, 11 & 13; pl.122, 19. Only the cupids appear not to have been recorded in his work.
Early to mid Antonine.
