Subject notes
The fountain was built around 1538. The doorway was the inner end of the gate passage to James I's palace, formerly surmounted by statues representing the Three Estates: the Clergy, Lords and Commons. During the reconstruction of the palace under James V, the fountain was built and the main entrance in the east wall was replaced by a more convenient one in the south wall. Minor restoration was undertaken from 1906. The building was burnt out following the billeting there of the Duke of Cumberland's troops in 1746. The photograph was taken by Thomas Easton of Falkirk.
