Subject notes
When long wall coal mining replaced the stoop and room method, the roof was kept up by timbers rather than columns of coal. A young cashier in Bo'ness saw the efficiency of importing ready cut timber in various sizes from Russia and Scandinavia. Soon Bo'ness was nicknamed 'Proptown' and smelt of resin.
