Description
This class can include Registers of Ages and Capacities, Board of Trade letter books. letter books containing internal correspondence within the post, Seizures Registers, lists of furniture and premises, charges against officers, Wreck Letter books, Report books, Arrival books, Sailing books, King's warehouse registers, Registers of fees and deeds, etc. This class also includes Royal Naval Reserve registers which were administered by the Collector on behalf of the Royal Navy.

The Customs and Excise functions operated separately until 1909 when the combined Board of Customs and Excise was formed by the transfer of responsibility for Excise from the Board of Inland Revenue.
The Board of Customs operated locally through Outports, which included Bo'ness and Grangemouth. Excise operated through local Districts which also included Bo'ness and Grangemouth. Collectors were based at each Outport or District, with subordinate staff at subordinate Outport Stations or Excise Creeks.
