Administrative History
John Cook, a merchant, was born in 1748. He was a shopkeeper in 1788 and purchased property in Falkirk High Street in 1792. He died in 1835 at the age of 87. He married Mary Gaff and they had two daughters, Mary (who married John Bennie) and Elizabeth.

Robert Cook, also a merchant in Falkirk, may have been the brother of John Cook, merchant. In 1795 he was a signatory of the indenture of his son John Cook to Walter Scott WS Edinburgh (father of Sir Walter Scott, novelist and poet). This John Cook matriculated at Glasgow University in 1792 aged 13. His 1794 certificate was signed by John Anderson whose bequest founded Anderson's Institution, now the University of Strathclyde.

Robert Cook also received letters from John Wood, Port Glasgow, who addressed him as "Dear brother" and who appears to have been his brother in law. John Wood married Elizabeth Household in the 1780s. He died in 1811. His son John Wood junior completed the construction of the "Comet".
