Subject notes
Rough Castle was the second smallest fort on the Antonine Wall, covering 0.4ha. The Wall and Ditch along the north front, and the fort rampart and ditches are clearly visible, making it the best preserved fort. The Wall had a fort every 3.2k.Archaeologists have found in the centre of the fort the remains of a headquarters building, a granary and another stone building, perhaps the commanding officer's house. A bathhouse stood in the annex. It was built by the Sixth Cohort of Nervians, from the Lower Rhine.
