Description
A boy in boots and gaiters is starting a Fordson tractor by turning the starting handle (cawin the haunle). The tractor has steel wheels with spade lugs fitted to the rear ones to improve traction. It has a ribbed radiator top tank, a feature introduced in 1932.

Starting handles were fitted to motor vehicles until the 1960s, as batteries often went 'flat'. There was a knack to hand starting. If the handle was held between the thumb and fingers and the engine backfired, it could cause an injury.
