Subject notes
It required skill to fit the various parts of the harness - the neck collar, bridle, saddle, girth and so on. The Scottish collar was heavy, weighing between 9 and 14 kg. Iron hames were then fitted which formed the frame round the collar to which the chains were attached.

William Forbes purchased Callendar Estate in 1783 and was an Improving Laird. He enclosed fields, encouraged the use of manure and lime to improve soil fertility, increased the average size of his farms and gave long leases which led to agricultural improvements.
