altar

Description
Small stone altar without an inscription. The stone is almost symmetrical with four bands at the base and capital. The upper surface has been smoothed to a flat finish removing any trace of bolsters. The back of the stone is very rough with fissures appearing suggesting the altar originally stood with its back against a wall.
Presumably the inscription was painted on with a dye and has subsequently been lost.

Documentation notes
"When our father, along with mr JH Cunningham was in charge of the excavation at Castlecary (see Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, April 1903), he was given the altar by someone in authority, and it has been in our house ever since. This is all we know of its history."
