View of shale works showing the vertical retorts. They are clad in steel-braced brick. Flues project from the top and pipes run along the sides, near the top. A pipe runs into the base. A small hutch sits on rails leading below the retorts. A wagon sits in the adjacent siding.

The pipe on the retorts is the oil vapour take-off main. The pipe at the bottom was for injecting steam to aid distillation. The hutch was for transporting away the spent shale released from the bottom of the retort.
